If potential fetal distress is noted and if there is failure to deliver the baby in a timely manner, then the condition of the baby can proceed from fetal distress to hypoxia (inadequate oxygen) and ischemia (insufficient blood flow to the brain). This condition is sometimes known as perinatal asphyxia or hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. As a result of inadequate oxygen and blood flow to the brain, the baby’s brain can become permanently damaged.
